Broken Parking Meters Policy May Be Rescinded

Posted: Updated:
An existing Los Angeles city policy may be rescinded next week, and you may be able to legally park for free at broken meters. The city council is looking to rescind the policy that was voted on in 2010 and came into play in January 2013.

The policy states that if you park at a meter that is broken, you get a ticket and may get a fine.

Westside City Councilman Mike Bonin believe this is a bad policy and wants to see it turned around. He also believes policies like that make people hate the government. He heads up the Los Angeles City Council's Transportation Committee, and they voted 4-0 to rescind the policy. There were so few meters that were inoperable, the LA Department of Transportation wasn't going to have a big financial impact from this decision.

Some parking meter operators we spoke to believe that people will start breaking the meters, but they are very hard to break. One of the functions of the meter is that they send a signal back to the command center, so they know when the meter needs repair.

The motion is now headed for a vote by the full city council on Wednesday, July 31.  If this is approved, then the policy would be lifted right away.
