New Haven residents upset over newly approved landfill

Posted: Updated:
NEW HAVEN, Mich. (WJBK) -

Lots of trash talk is going on in the village of New Haven.

Residents are upset about a new landfill. Some say city council tried to sneak a proposal through without any input from the public.

The approved host agreement with Rizzo Services calls for a new landfill in the area of 27 Mile Road and Gratiot. The project would take 3-5 years to complete. The move has a lot of people angry.

Ann Pridemore says council disguised the new landfill on its agenda as 'community development.' "Suddenly, this host agreement was bum rushed through," says Pridemore.

New Haven trustee Jeremy Davis says he voted because the village needs the money.

Chuck Rizzo, with Rizzo Environmental Services, says the location's geology is right and truck traffic would not need to be re-routed since another landfill is located nearby.

Rizzo is hosting a town hall meeting to answer the concerns of residents on Wednesday, August 7 at Endeavor Middle School.
