Flooding Fears: Storms hit Yarnell again

Posted: Updated:
YARNELL, Ariz. -

Yarnell was under a flash flood warning for a few hours Friday after well over an inch of rain fell and for the people who live next to the burn area, that means a lot of clean up.

A front loader cleared a silt and ash covered road after another big storm left behind a mess.

"Last night, we had a waterfall coming down off the mountain that is how much it was," said Larry Wells.

The homes on this street back up to the charred mountain, so when the run-off comes down, it brings everything with it.

"You could hear it.. was like a freight train coming over the rocks," said Linda Buschman.

Buschman covered parts of her yard with sandbags, but she can't relax.

"We are still getting a lot of silt coming down and there is no stopping it.  The only thing you can do is stand on the side with a shovel and keep the trough clear and grab some more sandbags and keep building it up," she said.

This latest storm brought in more than an inch and a half of rain.

Since the wildfire, this area has seen as much as three inches of rain.  It's already been a rough monsoon season.

"Never anything like this never," said Bernie Dickson.

Dickson has called Yarnell home for more than 30 years.

"It is just devastating with this black stuff all over everywhere. There isn't much we can do about it. It is going to come down until it is all gone that is all," he said.

The people in the burn area have been told to expect that black run-off for awhile.
