No one disputes chemical compounds contaminate the soil and ground water in the Carousel neighborhood in Carson.
285 homes sit on top of what was once a huge Shell Oil tank farm . Five years ago. The California Regional water quality control board detected benzene at 100k times the screening level and methane gas as well.
Neighbors say exposure to the chemicals has led to health problems. They also say several pets have grown tumors and died from cancer.
Shell oil has insisted there is no immediate health risk. But Despite being ordered to remove the contaminants 2years ago... How to clean it up has been debated... And it hasn't started.
Carson's Mayor says he's asking the council to declare a state of emergency to pressure the company and the state to expedite the clean up. They are expected to take up the issue on Monday. No comment from Shell Oil at the time this report was filed.
