LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -
File this one under the heading unintended consequences which often happens in politics.

Suffice it to say Gov. Rick Snyder did not decide to send Detroit into bankruptcy in order to improve his standing in the polls, but by golly, that happened.

Last June the Conservative Intel Poll had the governor's job approval rating at 34%.  It's now at 41%, a seven point climb and a complete turnaround.  They did not ask if this was linked to the governor's decision on Detroit but one could connect those dots based on the other questions.

Do you have a more favorable opinion of the governor because of the decision?

A respectable 36% said yes; 23% said no and the rest concluded it had no impact on their view of Mr. Snyder.

Or how about this one: Do you agree or disagree with the governor's decision to appoint an Emergency Manager and file the bankruptcy motion.  55% agree, 21% don't and 23% are neutral.

Note this was not a poll of Detroiters.

So how does this cut politically for the governor as he moves into his re-election mode?

Frank Houston who is the Oakland County Democratic chair is not sure.  On one hand he thinks the governor gets style points for "making the call...it was a tough call," but long term the jury is still out.

"There's a lot of things that have not played out.  It could help or hurt...I think the people will give the governor a little leniency on that but it doesn't mean he handled the whole situation right."
And therein lies the challenge for this governor.  Nobody knows if this will work.  If next year on the eve of the election the headlines read: Snyder Saves Detroit, then he's a champ.  But if the negative headlines you are reading today drag on into October 2014, he could be a chump.
Wonder if the D's are hoping for a better Detroit if that helps Mr. S?
