Family, friends celebrate Travis Alexander's birthday with service project

Travis Alexander would have turned 36-years-old Sunday.

His former girlfriend was just convicted of killing the motivational speaker and salesman back in June of 2008 inside his Mesa home.

Family and friends spent time Sunday celebrating Alexander's birthday in a unique way.

After attending his family ward of the Mormon church Sunday morning, Travis Alexander's sister and countless other family members and friends headed to a Phoenix park to do exactly what Travis did on past birthdays: serve others.

Tanisha Sorenson carefully placed the bags in a neat row on the sidewalk inside University Park in Phoenix.

Her brother's smile and his favorite motivational quote were stapled to the care packages distributed in his honor.

"All these pictures of my brother, it touched us so much because that's who he was," said Sorenson.

"Any act of kindness service for someone you know. That's what he would want. That's what he's about. That's who Travis was," Clancy Talbot.

On what would have been his 36th birthday, those who knew Travis Alexander best celebrated by doing what he loved most, helping others.

400 bags containing water, food, clothes, shoes and essential hygiene products were given away.

Even perfect strangers, the people who need help the most, lent a hand.

"It's a push to better my life, to help others better theirs along the way," said Armithea Burks.
The last day they spent together was similar to this a day of service and that's why Travis Alexander's sister wanted to spend her brother's birthday giving back to others.

"He had his car filled with these exact bags," said Sorenson.

Sorenson says her brother wanted to change the world, to better people and show them the way to a brighter future.

She knows Travis' goals were reached there Sunday.
