Neighbors Help Each Other In South Philly Building Collapse

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

"There's a lady across the street who has a little baby and the glass in her storm door had broken, and she was holding her baby out through the broken glass of the storm door," recalls Jukenit Smith.

Jukenit Smith was inside one of the homes that collapsed. He says he was pushed outside by the debris. But he immediately jumped in to help his neighbor with her new baby.

"When I got out ... I went over there and grabbed the baby," he recalls. "They were still trying to get out, but they wanted to make sure the baby got out first, so I grabbed the baby and took it to another neighbor down the street. We're trying to get in to see them. We haven't seen them yet."

Frantic families ran in to check on loved ones, including the family of the baby Liam who was rescued by his neighbor.

"They were buried. Daisy was buried in the rubble," says a family member. Daisy is baby Liam's mom.

"They're pretty beat up, but they were just lucky; real lucky," says the man.

One of the three houses that came down was being rehabilitated. A worker was taken to University of Pennsylvania with serious burns to his upper body. Seven more people with minor injuries, including baby Liam and his family, were brought to Jefferson Hospital.

"It was horrible...was really really horrible," says Carol McKenna, who lives right across the street from the explosion.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
