It was a day unimaginable for Wilmington police officer Brian McCanney.

"I've saved a bunch of people, but this was totally different. It was a miracle that's what it is," says Brian McCanney.

Just as his patrol shift was ending early Sunday morning, the unexpected happened. His coworker, Officer Matthew Geiser, called for an ambulance. His wife Stacey was in labor.

"I was getting off a long 12 hour shift. I had one hour left," Recalls McCanney.

McCanney tells us that as soon as he got to Geiser's home, he realized there wasn't enough time to get Stacy to the hospital. The baby, little Sadie, had to be delivered at home.

"Either she was going to deliver in the police car or inside the house. So we decided to deliver her inside the house. We laid her on the ground and put towels and blankets down," describes McCanney.

McCanney and Geiser are friends on the force. We talked to Geiser about what happened.

"We were trying to tell her not to push because EMTs and medics were a few minutes away. But nature took its course and she said she had to so. I was like, ok, here we go," remembers Geiser.

"This was the first birth I've seen in the six years I've been here," says Geiser.

McCanney tells us Stacy was in labor for about six minutes. He credits his delivery skills from working, more than a decade, as a volunteer firefighter and EMT with the Odessa Fire Department.

"You just get a clear mind and all your experience just comes to you, and you know what you're doing," says McCanney.

Little Sadie and Stacy were taken to Christiana Hospital. Both are happy and healthy.

"I know Brian, he's a friend. And I knew he was quite capable," says Geiser.

For McCanney, life as a Wilmington police officer is forever changed.

"I have at least another 14 years working with them, of course, there will be jokes going around," McCanney quips.

Officer McCanney tells FOX 29 that he has a new nickname on the force. He's now known as "The Doctor." He tells me he plans on visiting little Sadie and getting to know her.

According to the Officer Geiser's family, the mom and baby are home and doing great. Sadie is now adjusting, and her brother and sister adore her.
