Camp Director Accused Of Failing To Report Suspected Child Abuse

PENNSBURG, Pa. -

A counselor at a Montgomery County camp has been charged with failing to report suspected child abuse and related offenses, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Ryan Wexelblatt, 41, of the 200 block of Williams Avenue in Narberth, works as director at Camp Sequoia in Pennsburg, FOX 29 News has learned.

He also faces one count each of unsworn falsification and obstruction.

Upper Perkiomen Police District say they received an online Crime Stoppers tip this month alleging that a juvenile had been sexually assaulted by two other juveniles at a summer camp, and that the director of the camp did not report the assault to the proper authorities.

Police and Montgomery County detectives investigated and found that overnight from July 4 into July 5 when the victim disclosed to camp counselors that he had been sexually assaulted while in his room that night.

According to prosecutors, the counselors immediately notified the most senior counselor, who explained the incident and identified suspects to Wexelblatt.

Police said Wexelblatt briefly interviewed the suspects and instructed his senior counselor to drive them to a Philadelphia airport that same morning to make sure that they boarded flights to return to their home states.

But authorities said Wexelblatt never reported the suspected sexual assault to any law enforcement or child protective services, "pursuant to his mandatory responsibilities, as a child care worker, to report such assaults on children." And he never instructed any of his counselors to do so.

Wexelblatt next faces a preliminary hearing scheduled for Sept. 12 at 10 a.m.

FOX 29's Stephanie Esposito will have more details in a live report later today.
