It was a murder that shocked Metro Detroit, two young Family Dollar store employees killed on the job.
A preliminary hearing for their accused killer was adjourned but the court appearance gave the mother of one of the victims a chance to share her son's picture.
34-year-old Lavere Bryant, a former employee, faces two counts of murder in connection with the shooting deaths of the two young people. Police say 20-year olds Joseph Orlando and Brenna Machus were killed earlier this month during a robbery. Bryant was due in court at 8:30a.m. but did not arrive until about 10:50 a.m. The case was adjourned until August 21 by the judge because the defense asked for more time to go through discovery.
FOX 2 spoke with Joe Orlando's mother who was in the courtroom awaiting today's proceedings.
She said her only son was a great kid and was very loving and very protective and she believes that's probably part of the reason why he was killed. He was trying to protect Brenna. Holding a picture of Joe to her heart she believes it's important for Lavere to see her son's picture everytime he's in court.
Although he denied any involvement in the murders at his arraignment Orlando's mother believes Bryant is guilty. "The facts are just too much, I believe he did it," she said.
