Camp Director Accused Of Not Reporting Child Abuse

Posted: Updated:
PENNSBURG, Pa. -

The Montgomery County District Attorney says that the director of Camp Sequoia, Ryan Wexelblatt, not only failed to report a sexual assault that allegedly took place in the dorm building, but signed a statement denying ever knowing about it

The camp website says that they're an overnight camp for boys with poor social skills.

"If it were not for an anonymous tipster, this child would still likely be suffering in silence," says DA Risa Vetri Ferman.

Authorities learned about the alleged assault because of a call to their crime stoppers tipline four days after the alleged sexual assault. The affidavit accuses Camp Sequoia's Director Ryan Wexelblatt of trying to cover up the assault.

"The director initially denied the detectives access to the child, but eventually did let them speak with the child," says DA Ferman.

Montgomery County detectives say that the victim was assaulted by two other campers as he slept. In the middle of the night, the victim reached out to a camp counselor for help. The affidavit says that two camp counselors told a senior camp counselor who contacted camp director Ryan Wexelblatt by text message immediately. They then had a detailed conversation with him the next morning.

"Instead of reporting to law enforcement, as he was required, he did not tell the police what happened and instead put the two boys, alleged perpetrators, on planes and sent them home," says DA Ferman.

The boys who allegedly committed the assault were on airplanes to their homes in Chicago and Florida within hours of the incident.

"Never told the victim's family, never told police or even tried to see if the child needed medical care of any sort," says DA Ferman. Wexelblatt is out on bail but didn't answer his door today.

Camp Sequoia issued a statement saying Wexelblatt has stepped down from his position and the camp will resume for the last two weeks of summer. Wexelblatt is not allowed to make contact with the camp. His lawyer would not comment at this time.
