A report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office found misconduct cases in the Transportation Security Administration are up 26 percent in the last 3 years. The incidents range from agents showing up late to work to napping on the job, security breaches and even thefts.
Now a House homeland security subcommittee is taking the TSA to task.
The GAO documented more than 9,000 cases of abuse, fraud, and misconduct, with at least 1,900 of those cases classified as significant enough to cause a security threat.
The TSA's deputy director defended his agency during a hearing on Capitol Hill.
"The overwhelming majority of TSA employees are good people doing good work," John Halinski said. "Nevertheless misconduct occurs but when it does, TSA takes prompt and appropriate action."
Halinski said a few bad employees give the whole system a black eye.
But the GAO report shows a more systemic failure in the way TSA trains and supervises airport security workers.
Several committee members hammered home that point.
The report calls on the TSA to improve how they monitor employees and investigate misconduct. The TSA said it is working to implement the recommendations.
