Philly Sets Record For Wettest Summer, Flood Watch Continues

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Philadelphia has now officially set a record for the wettest summer on record.

Through 2 p.m. Thursday, a total of 24.78 inches of rain has fallen at Philadelphia International Airport during this meteorological summer (June through August).

That breaks the record set two years ago, when 24.58 inches of rain fell. The next closest was almost 23 inches back in 1906.

Official climate records for Philadelphia date back to 1872.

Some area are drying out a little this afternoon, but we're not out of the woods yet.

FOX 29 Meteorologist Caitlin Roth tweeted this afternoon that the heaviest line of rain had pushed south and east of the city into South Jersey, including the shore points. Plenty of lightning was embedded within the showers.

And high-resolution forecast models show a secondary band swinging through this evening.

"Don't count on drying till after 10 p.m.," Roth said.

A Flood Watch issued by the National Weather Service for much of the Delaware Valley remains in effect through midnight.

We only forecasted a high of 79 degrees today. On Friday, we'll climb to 86 degrees because the sun comes back out and it warms up nicely.

Most of Saturday looks decent, with some sunshine. But, later on, probably after dark, we could see a pop-up shower or thunderstorm with another frontal system coming through.

We do dry out Sunday with a high of 83, and we get to 80 degrees on Monday, which looks like a very pleasant day.

Then, there's unsettled weather by the middle of next week, Serio said.
