Unwelcoming graffiti targets some of Detroit's newest residents

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

These days the word movement is often heard to describe the influx of socially aware hipsters and artists now roaming the streets of Detroit.

But it appears not every one is excited about the new neighbors.

Over the last week, several buildings in southwest Detroit have been tagged with graffiti telling the newcomers they aren't welcome.

Recent census figures show that Detroit's overall population shrank by 25 percent in the last ten years, but another figure tells a different and more intriguing story.

During the same time period, the city experienced a 59 percent increase in the number of college-educated residents under the age of 35, nearly 30 percent more than two-thirds of the nation's 51 largest cities.

Detroit outsiders and population watchers see it as a positive trend -- new ideas and new visions to help rebuild the city.

But in rantings on social media, some of the longtime Detroiters see it has a threat -- people looking to take over their city.

Mark Durfee posted on Facebook, "Fitting into a place is more than buying property there or even opening up a business there. Respect isn't opening doors for people, but rather it is learning the history of the last 300 years of the place your moving into."

He goes on to say, "It's not personal, but no one who has lived in the same house their grandma lived in wants to feel like they are being pushed out by a group of strangers who have bank financing they could never get."
