DETROIT (WJBK) - More than 1,000 students attending Education Achievement Authority high schools in Detroit will now have an opportunity to earn free college credit, as well as paid internships while they're still in school.

The new program is part of a partnership between the EAA, Focus: HOPE, the U.S. Department of Labor, the Detroit Employment Solutions Corp., Wayne County Community College District, and Henry Ford Community College. It officially starts in September, but students can get a head start now by contacting their schools. Students can also apply at enrollment fairs that will be held at every EAA school Saturday August 3rd, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Students in the program will spend half their day at their high school, then attend class at either Henry Ford Community College or WCCD. "They have the opportunity to earn concurrently their high school diploma and possibly 60 [college] credit hours... in their chosen field or career study," said EAA Chancellor Dr. John Covington.

To be eligible, students must be juniors or seniors at Denby, Mumford, Pershing, Southeaster, or Henry Ford high schools. There is no GPA requirement. Spots will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis.
