GDOT warns of phone scam targeting drivers

Posted: Updated:

The Georgia Department of Transportation is investigating a phone scam targeting people with claims of unpaid electronic traffic tickets.  It has emerged within the last few weeks, and authorities say the calls have involved threats of jail time if the victim doesn't pay up.

GDOT says it received a complaint last week from a resident who reported receiving a call from someone who identified himself as a lieutenant with the Department of Transportation.  The caller demanded immediate payment of speeding fines-- but the DOT doesn't collect traffic fines.
The scam involves callers claiming to be from other agencies as well.  The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office says it began investigating similar reports about impersonations last month.  In all cases, the caller threatens a quick arrest if a fine is not paid with a credit or debit card

Anthony Rogers told FOX 5 it happened to him more than a week ago.  He said person who called him identified himself as a Fulton County Sheriff's Office deputy who said he had an overdue electronic traffic fine of $357.54.  The caller said it had to be paid over the phone

"We don't collect any fines on anything," said GDOT spokesperson Natalie Dale.  "So if someone is contacting you from the Department of Transportation saying that they need to collect a fine from you, or a traffic ticket, or that you were clocked going 75 on the interstate, that's not us.  We do not do that."

In some cases, investigators say the scammer has claimed to have an arrest warrant for a family member who has failed to appear in court.

GDOT says anyone who gets a call about unpaid tickets should report it immediately.
