Family creates elaborate corn maze in honor of fallen firefighters

DEWEY, Ariz. -

Have you seen this? An aerial shot of a corn maze honoring the 19 fallen firefighters, complete with an American flag, the Granite Mountain hotshots symbol and firefighter boots.

An impressive display -- but is it real?

That's what we wondered when we first saw the picture on the internet, but we tracked it down to a farm in Dewey, Arizona, which is not too far from Prescott.

We spoke to the family behind it.

"We do a corn maze and this year we decided to do it after the Yarnell 19," says Sharla Mortimer.

Sharla and her family own Mortimer family farms, and this year, dedicating it to the Yarnell firefighters was a no-brainer.

"We are right next door to Prescott and it's our community and we've been impressed how the community has come together and supported and the families."

We spoke to Sharla via Skype and she gave us a ground level tour of the maze.

"We draw it out, the logo from the memorial, the work boots and flag and the Yarnell 19 and never forgot that was the main theme."

"We draw it out in corn it's not an easy thing to do with all pathways. Once it's drawn out then we mark it in the field and then we cut away the plants to make the design we are looking for."

And surprisingly this does not take that long.

"It took about 2 days to make the main design and 12 hours to cut it out with 3 guys," says Sharla. "Our hope is that this will give people an opportunity to celebrate the lives of the firemen and also bring the family and have a fun day to memorialize."

The corn stalks in the maze are about 2 feet high right now. When the maze opens in the fall, it will be about 10 feet high.
