Chicago police seize 4,200 illegal firearms

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Chicago's police superintendent says more than 4,200 illegal firearms have been seized by his department so far this year.

Garry McCarthy says the results are due to citywide violence reduction measures that have been implemented to enhance public safety.

McCarthy says police can't act alone, and is calling for the state to enact stronger gun laws.

McCarthy says Chicago Police recover more illegal guns than officers in any city in the country. Yet, he says, without a state law requiring real jail time for criminals carrying illegal guns, offenders can quickly be back on the street. He wants a 3-year mandatory minimum sentence for illegal gun possession in Illinois.

In July, Illinois became the last state in the nation to approve a concealed-carry law.
