State representative says pet coke still being dumped along Detroit River

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

A new controversy involving petroleum coke along the Detroit River. A state representative says pet coke is still being dumped even after the company involved said they stopped. And she has the video to prove it.

Click on the video player to watch Randy Wimbley's report.

State Rep. Rashida Tlaib is leading the charge against the dumping of pet coke in Southwest Detroit. But she says city hall is standing in her way.

"[Mayor Dave Bing] is our mayor he's still getting paid to be our mayor he has to act like our mayor," Tlaib told Fox 2 Saturday night.

She showed us video of pet coke being dumped in Detroit, recorded last Monday - more than a month after Tlaib says the company Detroit Bulk Storage said it would stop dumping and loading the coal-like materail on Detroit's riverfront.

"They have received a number of tickets including a cease and desist order," Tlaib said.

But residents say the company has not complied and they're paying the price. Some say pet coke has been found in their homes. We tried to contact the company involved. Our calls have not yet been returned. Stay with Fox 2 and myfoxdetroit.com for updates.
