Spalding-Griffin superintendent apologizes for bus problems

GRIFFIN, Ga. -

Parents are concerned about school bus problems in the Griffin-Spalding County School System. The problems include late buses and not enough drivers.

The system started the week with a new bus route system and a shortage of nine drivers.

Stephanie Johnson says the first couple of days have been rocky. Her daughter's bus has not arrived on time.

"We were down there at 7:30 and at 8:15, I had to leave to take her to school or she would be late," said Johnson.

Johnson said she fears leaving her daughter at the bus stop.

"Because I don't know 100 percent if the bus has ever come by on the route. I've had to take her both days and would she still be sitting there, would she have made it to school – I can't trust that. I can't leave her there. I need to know the buses are running," Johnson said.

The system has more than 10,000 students and 106 bus routes.

On Tuesday, Griffin-Spalding County Superintendent Curtis Jones apologized for bus problems that have left students waiting in the morning and arriving back home hours late. He promised to address the problems quickly.

"We apologize for parents for the inconvenience," Jones said. "We know that the first day of school -- especially for the kids first coming  -- is a big day and some students had to wait too long to get home and some had to wait too long to get picked up."

Jones said that the system will utilize coaches and retired administrators with commercial driver's licenses as substitute drivers until permanent replacements are ready to get behind the wheel.

"I think parents can anticipate when we get our final, long-term solution in place Thursday afternoon, we'll be close to normal again," Jones said.

The Griffin-Spalding system is also encourage people to apply for school bus driver positions.
