Suspect In Officer's Shooting May Be Tied To Murder Case

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Accused gunman Eric Torres said nothing as he was brought to police headquarters to face attempted murder charges in the shooting of 41-year-old police Officer Edward Davies.

"He's a bad individual, no question about it," said Commissioner Charles Ramsey.

Police say Torres shot Officer Davies during a struggle inside Almonte market. The bullet missed Davies' vest and hit him in the stomach. He 's already undergone two rounds of surgery.

"Hopefully, now all the bleeding has been stopped and he improves, but it's still a waiting game," Ramsey told FOX 29.

Sources say Torres is now being looked at as a possible suspect in the June 18 murder of a construction worker who was shot eight times on his way to work on Lawrence Street. Sources say the victim owed Torres money, and Torres may have been driving a car similar to the getaway vehicle.

"Hopefully upon his conviction he will spend the rest of his life in jail," Ramsey said.

"Stolen weapon. Twelve priors, five for fighting the police and he's out roaming the streets. I don't have an answer for it," said John McNesby, President of the Fraternal Order Of Police.

Police say the weapon Torres used to shoot Officer Davies was stolen in the Northeast from a former Philadelphia police officer's home. Another 9mm handgun taken from Torres house, along with $50,000 worth of heroin, is also being traced.

"I know there were prints out of the one house where the burglary took place, but I don't know if his prints match those prints or not," Ramsey added.

Police are asking for blood donations in Davis' name.

Investigators have not released surveillance video from inside the corner market where the shooting occurred. The owner of the store was not available for comment Wednesday.

The inside of the store is a small place and investigators say the shooting took place at close range.

Commissioner Ramsey and McNesby are also calling a female officer from the 25th District a hero for racing Davies to the hospital in her squad car. Ramsey says there's no doubt her actions helped save Davies' life.

"She's a hero. She saved his life," says Ramsey.

Police say the officer sped officer Davies to the emergency room and into surgery. Those precious seconds helped save his life.

"Had he not gotten to the hospital at the time he did, it probably would have been too late from the loss of blood," says Ramsey.

"She's a hero, she's having a tough time but she's got a lot of support with officers in the 25th. We'll give her whatever she needs to get through this," says McNesby.

Ramsey also noted that despite the violent confrontation with Torres and the fact that he fired a gun at an officer, no Philadelphia police officers returned fire.
