Benz Barges Through Government Building Sparking Terrorist Scare

Posted: Updated:
Northeast Philadelphia -

It's was the crash heard and felt around Academy Plaza.

"It sounded like a bomb," explained Kate Wilson who works next door. "I thought it was an earthquake. "

A  Mercedes Benz barreled straight through the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue's

Northeast office.

After seeing the crash, Joe Quigley and others thought  twice about running in to help.

"It could have been a terrorist attack for all we know," exclaimed Dan Devine.

"We backed off a little because I didn't know if a  terrorist attack was hitting
the government building and I thought the second explosion is when they draw
everyone in after the first," said Quigley.

Police say it wasn't an attack...just a man in his 80's who'd blacked out while driving through the parking lot.

Michael Behr witnessed the wreck and raced into the office, wading through the shattered glass  and broken bricks to help.

"I  knocked on his window and was he ok," Bher said of the driver. "He said he was fine."

The car lodged deep into the office, taking out desks before it stopped next to a couple of cubicles. Fortunately no one was in the  office. It closed not long before the Benz came barging in. Narrowly missing shoppers walking outside.

"Within a  minute he just missed three kids  as they just walked by," said Devine.

Police  say the man driving the car was taken to the hospital and will likely
be okay.

If you need to handle business  at the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue Northeast office we're told it likely won't be open Monday. The  closest location is in Center City.
