Illinois readies new teacher certification system

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Associated Press) -

A new, $3.2 million computer system to track Illinois teacher certifications is set to finally go live next month after a series of delays and glitches.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports the Educator Licensure Information system is aimed at clarifying Illinois' often complication certification process. The old system had 60 types of certifications, which often made it difficult to figure out which teachers were certified to teach different subjects or grade levels.

The new system has just three licenses, but required the state to convert hundreds of thousands of files.

The new system was briefly launched in July, but had to be shut down after a glitch allowed educators to see personal information about their colleagues.

It was originally supposed to have gone online in June 2012.
