Mike Tyson: It's Hard To Get Love When You're Suffering

Posted: Updated:

Mike Tyson is dying...or at least the former version of him is. The former heavyweight champ got emotional talking to Steve and Maria about the demons he's battled over the years while promoting his upcoming series on Fox Sports 1, "Being: Mike Tyson".

"That guy is dying...he's not dead yet but he's dying. I put in the work. It's an everyday process, it's not going to end overnight. I'm gonna deal with this problem for the rest of my life, till I die. I'm gonna have to work on this."

Steve asked Tyson about how he feels about being loved, then hated, and now being loved again. His answer was as subtle as one of his punches. "I just know they can't love you only when you're doing good. They have to love you when you're suffering as well and it's hard to get love when you're suffering."

Tyson told Steve and Maria that one of the things that keeps him on the right path is his family...especially his kids. "I don't want to give my children what my parents gave me. I don't want my children having no aspects of what I had when I was a kid because it wasn't really too positive. I didn't have a really functional mother and father...they were part of the problem." How does he rate himself as a father? "You can have all the wealth in the world...just have everything, but the example is not right. This is not an easy task. I'm not going to come on television and say I'm the ultimate dad, this is very difficult stuff...especially when you have forceful kids...they're not afraid of "Mike Tyson".

So how does he think "Iron Mike" would fare against the boxers of today? "I'm not being offensive I'm not being egotistical. Clean fighting, no drugs, food and water....the basics and I think I could beat almost anybody. I think I'd put my life that I could."
