Chip Taylor Still Makes Our Heart Sing

Posted: Updated:

The list of artists who have recorded his songs reads like a Mount Rushmore of rock and country music. Jimi Hendrix, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt all have at least one Chip Taylor song in their catalogues. Tuesday night, the Grammy Museum honors him by presenting An Evening with Chip Taylor, but the man who wrote "Wild Thing", and "Angel of the Morning" stopped by Good Day LA first.

So who was the real life inspiration for "Wild Thing"? "Over the years I've said it was many different people. I wrote it real fast and it wasn't quite finished so I went to the studio and asked the engineers to turn the lights out and I just said whatever came to my mind."

Chip... who was born James Wesley Voight, is from a pretty accomplished family. One brother Barry, is a world renowned geologist, credited with devising a formula that predicts earthquakes. His other brother? Oscar winning actor Jon Voight, who will be at Tuesday night's event.

Fun Facts About Chip Taylor:

  • He is an American songwriter, noted for writing "Angel of the Morning" and "Wild Thing." He is the brother of actor Jon Voight and geologist Barry Voight and the uncle of actress Angelina Jolie and actor James Haven.
  • After an unsuccessful attempt to become a professional golfer, Taylor entered the music business, writing pop and rock songs, both alone and with other songwriters.
  • Taylor's best-known songs are "Wild Thing," which, though originally recorded in 1965 by Jordan Christopher & The Wild Ones, became famous as both a 1966 hit single for The Troggs and a 1967 live performance by Jimi Hendrix, and "Angel of the Morning," likewise originally recorded by Evie Sands in 1967, but becoming a hit for Merrilee Rush in 1968, and then a million-selling single in 1981 for country-pop singer Juice Newton.
