Tim Skubick: Dems believe Snyder has a 'senior voter' issue

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

Governor Snyder celebrated his birthday on Monday, but he's not old enough to be in a nursing home.  But for political reasons, he should get a room to work on those who are.

The Democrats think, and hope, the GOP governor has a "senior voter" issue.

Even though he did it more than two years ago, many seniors looking at their monthly retirement check, see smaller numbers than they did before he took office. For those on a fixed income, they notice.

Over the objections of his senior insider advisors, this governor slapped a pension tax on old folks under the age of 67.  It was the "fair" thing to do, he still argues. Remember that seniors vote in huge numbers and Democrats will remind them who did that to them and they won't say it was fair.

EPIC-MRA pollster Bernie Porn thinks this is a challenge for the incumbent.  Democrats piggy-backed the pension tax with the cuts to education that the governor passed in order to fund a hefty business tax hike and it cost some house Republicans their seats last time out.

Mr. Porn predicts, "they will run that play again," against the governor.

Remembering that the November 2014 election is a long way off and things can change, at this read, Mr. Porn figures the governor is "vulnerable" not only with seniors but independent voters, many of whom are still trying to figure out who the real Rick Snyder is?

"There is confusion.  He's a little bit rock and roll," Mr. Porn surveys his survey data sheet.  (The governor loves data.)  "He's doing something's that appeal to independent voters but he's doing an awful lot that does not appeal."

On one hand he's pushing the Medicaid expansion stuff which wins him applause from the middle of the political spectrum, but then the middle remembers he signed the Right to Work law and has refused to check-in on gay marriage and other social issues the independents generally support.

Apparently guided by the notion that his decisions are not based on political outcomes, he marches on doing what he thinks is right and hoping the voters will credit him for doing that.

Perhaps that is his birthday wish?

Oh boy, the anti-Granholm mob will have fun with this.  They are talking in California about running the former Michigan governor for something as part of the “new generation” of D’s on the west bank.
