Police: Woman Slips Out Of Handcuffs And Steals Police Cruiser

LINDENWOLD, N.J. -

Thirty five year old Danyl Fontanez is under police guard at a local hospital after investigators say she slipped out of a pair of handcuffs Wednesday morning and stole a Lindenwold patrol car.

"She's a small person, kind of like your size, Handcuffs only go so tight," said Lindewold Detective Christopher Sherrer.

Fontanez was handcuffed in the back of the patrol car after a domestic dispute at a home on Brighton Avenue in Lindenwold. As police continued to investigate, she slipped off the handcuffs, kicked out the protective shield and climbed into the drivers seat. Then she took off.

"The pursuit only last five minutes and they stopped her on Bayberry Avenue in Cherry Hill. Apparently she has a relative in that area that she was just driving to," Detective Sherrer explained.

The five mile chase, down the White Horse Pike, went through at least two towns. No one was injured and the police car wasn't damaged,

"The good part is it was 1:30 in the morning so there wasn't a lot of traffic on the White Horse Pike at that time anyway. It only lasted five minutes. It wasn't like she got very far anyway," Det. Sherrer added.

After she again struggled with police, Fontanez was arrested and handcuffed again. She was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

"She was charged with eluding, resisting arrest and I'm not sure what additionally on top of that," Sherrer said.

Fontanez will now have plenty of time to work on her Houdini-like moves from inside a jail cell. By the way, police say it's not unusual to leave a patrol car running when transporting a prisoner during summer months.

"If you put somebody in a car when it's hot like this, they'll get really hot in the car, and you don't want that,  so we leave the car running." police explained

Fontanez was also charged with obstruction of justice and theft of a motor vehicle. She will be processed and arraigned on the charges when she is released from the hospital. Police say she remains hospitalized with a prior medical issue unrelated to her arrest on these charges.
