Proposal would raise Michigan speed limit to as high as 80 mph - Fox 2 News Headlines

Senator's proposal would raise Michigan speed limit

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Could the days of 70 miles an hour on Michigan freeways be coming to an end?

Watch Roop Raj & Amy Andrew's full reports on the issue above.

Political analyst Tim Skubick reports Sen. Rick Jones, (R) Grand Ledge, is working to change speed limits across the state. Skubick says Jones is drafting a bill that would allow the maximum speed limit allowed by law to be 75, and in some cases, 80 mph.

Jones, a former sheriff, says the speed limits would be determined by speed studies and data pooled by the Michigan State Police and M-DOT. Jones tells FOX 17 in Grand Rapids that state police agree that many Michigan highways can handle the higher speeds.

"If the scientific study and the engineering shows that's the best and safest speed, absolutely," says Jones. But don't expect speeds to increase where traffic exists. "Only in certain areas where it's not congested," says Jones.

"Will the benefit or arriving where you're going 2 or 3 minutes faster be worth the number of lives that will be killed, or people seriously injured," asked auto law attorney, Steve Gursten.

Skubick says not everyone in Lansing seems to be onboard. "I guess I would have to understand a little bit more why we would want to turn (the decision) over to an unelected group of people when it's the constituents that we represent who are going to be impacted by this," says Sen. Gretchen Whitmer, (D) East Lansing.

Jones tells FOX 17 he plans to finish the bill this fall.

Other states like Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Nebraska, Texas, Utah and others have speed limits as high as 75 or 80 mph.
