PECO is warning it's small business customers that a scam that was previously limited to residential customers, is now targeting their accounts.
The scam claims that the customer is behind on their account and they will have to make payment in order for their service to be continued.
The scammers are also asking customers to purchase pre-paid credit cards and contact a number to activate the accounts. Once the scammer gets that information, the funds on that car are drained.
Since late 2011, 85 customers have reported that they have been targets of this fraudulent operation.
PECO offers these tips for customers to help avoid scams:
If the caller cannot provide this information, it is likely the call is not coming from PECO. In this case, customers should not provide any information, and call the company immediately at 1-800-494-4000 to report the situation.
