'Sandy Lung' Affecting Some Homeowners After The Storm

Posted: Updated:
TOMS RIVER, N.J. -

As we approach 10 months since Superstorm Sandy struck the region, a number of residents in affected areas are suffering symptoms of what is being called, The Sandy Lung.

"There's no indication that there's any epidemic or anything," says Toms River Mayor Thomas Kalaher.

Toms River Mayor Thomas Kelaher says he's heard from homeowners in town who say that they've been developing respiratory issues after being exposed to mold, mildew, and other irritants inside their Sandy-damaged houses. The town is now offering a free screening for people tomorrow.

"If they've never been cleaned out, they're going to be filled with mold, and there will be a hazmat situation. There's no doubt about that," says Thomas Kelaher.

"For the first couple of days I had a mask on when we were down here, we were having troubles breathing for days after," says resident James Angley. James Angley has been helping his grandma Lynn rebuild their Ortley Beach House, since the storm hit

"She actually had a mold specialist and it's been better," says James Angley

The Ocean County free screening is from 9-2 tomorrow at Toms River High School East.
