How One Man Inspired Many to Clean Wilmington

Posted: Updated:

It takes a special kind of person to get people excited about cleaning up trash and refurbishing neighborhoods, those who know Salvador Lara say he's that kind of person.

Dozens of volunteers spent their Saturday at Hawaiian Avenue Elementary, sweeping, scrubbing and trimming.

Clean Wilmington is now a non-profit, volunteers clean different parts of the city.  But the project had a humble start and that start was Salvador Lara.

"I wanted to keep our neighborhood clean of trash and everything," said Salvador Lara.

Salvador says it made his sad to see the overflowing trash cans and piles of debris on the streets in his neighborhood so in 2007 he decided to change that.   "I would just get out of my house and I could see couches, mattresses, all kinds of trash all around the block. So I started at my neighborhood first," he said.

Salvador spent his weekends picking up trash on his own, for years.  Slowly, the word spread about his efforts.

People who know Salvador Lara say it's his spirit and the fact that he genuinely cares about his community, that drawn more and more volunteers to Clean Wilmington.

"He started picking up trash and got other people excited about it. He is a unique and wonderful individual. No question about it," said Dan Hoffman, the Executive Director of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce who's known Salvador for 10 years.

"I feel good, because I'm doing what I wanted to do.  Encourage people, encourage neighbors to participate and get together and get a cleaner and safer community.

Now clean Wilmington has projects lined up nearly every weekend.
