5 homes demolished in state-wide city cleanup initiative

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

In a state-wide effort to cleanup blighted buildings, the initiative kicked off today with the demolition of five houses on Turner St. in Detroit's UofD Marygrove neighborhood.

This project is the largest in state history, thanks to more than $50million in federal aid.

"This is not an act of charity, or philanthropy, on the part of the Federal government. This is an investment in the people of Detroit," says Michigan U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee.

He, along with several other federal, state, and local leaders attended the big demolition. Neighbors looked on as well.

About 4,000 buildings are slated to be demolished in Detroit, many of which are abandoned. Detroit Police Chief James Craig says 60% of all fires in Detroit originate in abandoned buildings. The grounds also breed plenty of other types of crime.

Several other Michigan cities are receiving funds to fight blight as well. Detroit will receive $52.3 million; Flint will get $20.1 million; Saginaw $11.2 million; Pontiac $3.7 million, and Grand Rapids $2.5 million.
