Jay Readey on civil rights in Chicago, Dionne Miller on Bethenny Frankel: Chat Room

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On Wednesday's Chat Room, Good Day Chicago commemorated the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech delivered at the March on Washington.

It was a defining moment in U.S. history and specifically for the American civil rights movement. An estimated 200,000 people marched on Washington that day, and many Chicagoans were among them. They say the speech changed their lives.

"That speech is like a pebble in a pond. You throw it in and it has a rippling effect," one woman told FOX News. "Just think affected hundreds of thousands of people there and then the millions of people listening in."

Jay Readey with the Chicago Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights described that moment in 1963 as a rhetorical high in American history, along with the Gettysburg Address and the Declaration of Independence. He said the highest aspirations of American values were expressed in public, in a way that everyone could get behind.

Readey said the community of lawyers he represents was very moved by that moment in history, and they believe the words and ideas still resonate today, and can be applied to present day situations where a person's civil rights are called into question. It is their job to defend and nurture those rights.

Ready joined Good Day anchors Dawn Hasbrouck and Anna Davlantes to discuss the state of civil rights and equal opportunity in Chicago and in America today.

Sun-Times Splash Editor Susanna Negovan and FOX 32 sports anchor Dionne Miller joined the Chat Room to discuss startling statistics of sexual harassment in the workplace, wearing your feelings about your divorce on a t-shirt, the word "twerk" being added to Oxford Dictionaries Online and the party Bethenny Frankel hosted for Chicago women Tuesday night.
