AZ tax preparers get prison for fraudulent claims

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Two northern Arizona tax preparers have each been sentenced to five years in prison for claiming millions in fraudulent Internal Revenue Service refunds.

Prosecutors say 49-year-old Deane Young and his 49-year-old wife Shelia Young were convicted by a federal jury in February.

The couple from Overgaard was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Phoenix. They were arrested in December 2010.

Authorities say the Youngs prepared and filed fraudulent tax returns on behalf of some of their clients that claimed false refunds ranging from about $12,000 to more than $368,000.

They say the Youngs filed 122 false returns in all, claiming nearly $10 million in fraudulent refunds.
