Man Says NJ Denied 'Atheist' License Plate Request

Posted: Updated:

A New Jersey man is outraged after his application for a personalized license plate was denied.

He wanted it to say "ATHE1ST," but state officials rejected him, claiming the plate would be offensive.

We're talking about David Silverman, who is the president of a group called American Atheists.

A photo shows him holding a vintage Garden State plate. But the one he wanted would replace the "I" in the word with the number one.

But the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission told Silverman his request was "objectionable," despite the vintage plate they already made years ago.

Silverman tweeted "My vanity 'atheist' license plate was just refused by the state. Reason: it's offensive." He used the hashtag "#wrong answer."

American Atheists also sent out a press release in response to the matter.

The state has since reversed its decision.
