Detour to buckled northern Ariz. highway opens

Updated:

LECHEE, Ariz. (AP) - Another detour to a buckled highway in northern Arizona has opened ahead of the Labor Day holiday.

The Department of Transportation says it has finished paving 27 miles of road that runs parallel to U.S. 89 from The Gap to LeChee. The road has a 25 mph speed limit and will be closed to non-local traffic at night until crews complete fencing.

While it's a more direct route to Page and Lake Powell, the department says taking U.S. 160 and State Route 98 might be quicker because of the restrictions.

The department decided to pave the road after a 150-foot section of pavement on U.S. 89 south of Page buckled in a landslide on Feb. 20.

That highway is expected to take two years and $40 million to repair.
