Movie Critic Matt Atchity: A Great Weekend For 14-Year Olds

Posted: Updated:

Matt Atchity told Steve and Maria that teenage girls will most likely rule movie theaters this weekend. He dropped a bombshell about "One Direction: This is Us"...it's getting strong reviews.

"As a documentary selling the band it works pretty well...is it very packaged about the persona that they wanna put across? Absolutely. But it is entertaining and the critics say it's worth seeing. They say even if you're a middling fan or you're on the fence or if you're the parent that has to take your kids to this, you're gonna be ok."

The new thriller "Getaway" is going after the guys who wouldn't be caught dead at the One Direction movie...but Matt says avoid this one like the plague.

"The critics hate this movie...it's not shot particularly well, there's very little continuity, the editing doesn't work, it's kinda one note...chase scenes happen for no reason...I really disliked this movie and I understand why critics are down on it...unless you have a burning desire to see what kind of movie gets a 1 percent (on Rotten Tomatoes) I would avoid it."

What do you get when you have great acting in a middling movie?

Closed Circuit stars Eric Bana about a man accused of a terrorist attack in London...reviews say this mystery thriller isn't very mysterious or thrilling.

"Critics are lukewarm on this, they say that the cast puts in good performances but the movie gets very heavy handed about the message it puts across about freedom of speech and the importance of free trials...kinda takes away from the tension that should be there."

Matt says unless you're a One Direction fan, none of the new releases are really worth seeing. He says this is the perfect weekend to catch up on releases that you may not have seen yet, including "Blue Jasmine" and "The World's End."

Atchity is the editor in chief for the pop-culture website "Rotten Tomatoes." He also hosts a new show on Sirius XM called "Rotten Tomatoes Radio."

The weekly one hour call in show airs Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
