15-year-old steals Mesa cop car

MESA, Ariz. -

Mesa Police have arrested a 15-year-old who jumped into the driver's seat of a Mesa Police cruiser while officers were stopped to respond to a disturbance call.

About 1 a.m. Sunday, Mesa Police were called to the area of 2nd St and Mesa Drive. They interrupted a loud party involving several people under the age of 21 who were suspected of consuming alcohol.

They cited several people and one adult. One of the juveniles was so intoxicated, that person had to go to the hospital.

While officers were otherwise engaged, someone jumped into the driver's seat of their marked police cruiser. The suspect backed up into a parked car -- and when officers tried to stop him and pull him out of the vehicle, he accelerated and broke the officer's grip.

The suspect then struck an ambulance -- the ambulance that his underage friend was in -- and fled.

Dispatchers were able to locate the police car about 5 minutes later by tracking its GPS unit. It was a half mile from the disturbance call.

When officers arrived, they found the cruiser idling -- but no one was inside. A short time later they found the suspect hiding in some nearby bushes.

Mesa Police Sgt. Tony Landato says there may have been a loaded AR-15 in the trunk.

The 15-year-old is facing charges of vehicle theft, aggravated assault, endangerment, hit-and-run, and driving under the influence.

The teen had apparently been at the party earlier and ran when officers arrived.
