Teen Football Player Donates Organs After Death

Posted: Updated:

16-year-old Tyler Lewellen suffered a head injury during an Arlington High football scrimmage and later died.  But his family kept him on life support for nearly a week in order to honor the teen's wishes and donate his organs.

During a tearful candle light vigil family and friends of 16-year-old Tyler Lewellen came together.

"When we first brought home Tyler from the hospital I was kind of mad, you know, because I really wanted a little sister," said Marcus Lewellen, Tyler's older brother.

Tyler's family shared memories and jokes, but at the very young age of just 16 Tyler shared more of himself with others than most people ever will.

"He's going to live on.  His heart, lungs, liver kidneys and even his bone marrow which is so rare to match, is going to help others," said Tina Lewellen, Tyler's mom.  Tina said it was Tyler who wanted to donate his organs, even his bones and tissue which can help up to 68 other people.

For Tyler's family getting over the shock, of Tyler's sudden collapse during an Arlington High football scrimmage and then his death, is next to impossible.

"Imagine what it's like to have your child play football and never be conscious again," said Tyler's grandmother, Geri Bowes.

The family wants to invite the community to Tyler's memorial service Saturday Sept. 7th at 10 a.m. at The Grove Community Church: 1900 Grove Community Dr. Riverside, CA 92508.
