Instead of yelling at your teen, try this

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (myFOXDetroit.com) -

If you find the only way you can communicate with a teenager is to yell, it may be time for a reevaluation.

After looking at about 1,000 middle class American families, University of Pittsburgh scientists discovered yelling is not only ineffective, but could raise the risk of depression and lead to more hostile teens.

The research published in the journal 'Child Development' found that 90% of us admits to harsh verbal discipline.
So, try this instead:
     - Use face to face communication, this will help you respond instead of emotionally reacting.
     - Give the teen the problem: Ask, 'how do you plan on fixing the problem you created?'
     - Use structure: Post rules on a wall such as turn off phone at 10PM. This decreases arguments and makes expectations very clear.

According to empoweringparents.com, yelling turns you into your child's emotional equal.
