JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) -- The mother of a newborn found abandoned but alive behind an apartment building in northern New Jersey is under arrest.

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office says Rosibel Lanza was taken into custody late Wednesday night.

Authorities believe the 39-year-old Jersey City resident gave birth to the boy at home on Aug. 31. Prosecutors say Lanza then placed the child in a shopping bag surrounded by paper towels and toilet paper, and tied the bag.

The bag containing the baby was found discarded behind a Jersey City apartment. It was discovered by young children playing behind the building.

Lanza has been charged with child abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.

It's not clear if she has retained an attorney for her first court appearance on Thursday.
