Police Seek Man Who Maced, Beat, Robbed 82-Year-Old

PHILADELPHIA -

Philadelphia police say they want the public to help them find the person who beat and robbed an 82-year-old man in Frankford.

The victim was walking around 9:50 a.m. Tuesday on the 5100 block of Griscom Street, approaching Dyre Street, when the suspect sprayed him in the face with mace. Police said the man punched the victim until he fell to the ground and took his money.

The attacker left his victim on the ground, police said, and walked east on a SEPTA access road toward the 5100 block of Frankford Avenue.

"Evidently someone was watching him to even follow him to knock him upside the head and rob him. You see him around here by himself, he doesn't bother anybody, but that's what's happening today. It's sad, really sad," says Patricia Sills, President of the Parks Association.

Police described the suspect seen on surveillance video as a black male, between 5-feet-9-inches and 6-feet-tall, weighing 250 pounds. He was seen wearing a white short and blue jeans.

The victim suffered minor abrasions to his face and body and is in pain from being hit and kicked. He turns 83 years old tomorrow but will likely celebrate at home, his granddaughter says he's not comfortable leaving the house now.

Northeast Detectives said to call 9-1-1 if you see this man. Know who he is? Submit a tip by calling 215-686-TIPS (8477), texting to PPD TIP (773847), or using this electronic form.
