Boston Bombing Victim Returns Home

Posted: Updated:

Doctors wondered if he'd ever walk again but 65 year old John Odom, drove up to his own welcome home party, and walked in on his own two feet.  He is the last Boston bombing victim to return home, after suffering extensive life threatening injuries.

There were plenty of hugs and a few tears as family and friends reunited with John and his wife, Karen after they landed at LAX from Boston Friday afternoon.

John Odom said, "it's wonderful, words cannot express the feeling right now."   His wife later added, "today is a monumental day for us."

But it was a long journey to get to this point.  Shrapnel from the first explosion in Boston severed arteries in both of Mr. Odom's legs.  The bleeding was so profuse he was on life support for 10 minutes and in critical condition for three weeks.  His wife escaped without a scratch and stayed by his side the entire time.

"When the doctors come into the room and say this is truly a miracle you know you've beaten the odds," said Karen.

Eleven surgeries later and after months of physical therapy.  John Sodom says he's looking forward to the simple things in life, he says he'll never take for granted.  The first thing he says he wants to do is unlock his front door, walk into his home, and sleep in his own bed.

"For me simple wasn't easy, being in a bed for so many months and not being able to move," he says, he wants to get up in the morning and take a walk down the beach and grab a cup of coffee.

The Odoms say they will return to Boston next year to watch their nephew run the marathon, but they say they won't be standing near the finish line.
