Valley streets get soaked with rain

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

Heavy rain flooded numerous streets in the Phoenix metropolitan area and also caused some power outages.

Portions of Deer Valley Road, Bell Road and Greenway Road were closed under the I-17 freeway due to flooding. As of 7:30 p.m., the underpasses were reopened.

The Deer Valley area received 2.64 inches of rain in the past two days. Other cities that saw big rain totals are Mesa with 3.07 inches, and Ahwatukee with 2.2 inches.

Other areas of the state also saw flooding, including:

- State Route 71 is closed in both directions approximately one mile south of US 93
- State Route 386 is closed in both directions between SR 86 and Kitt Peak Observatory
- Salome Road is closed near Interstate 10, approximately 80 miles east of the California border
- Eastbound State Route 88 is closed at milepost 200, northeast of Apache Junction

"In a very short period of time this morning the rain came down, there was a lot of heavy rain over a short period of time, that did cause a few issues," said Caroline Carpenter, spokeswoman for ADOT.

"A lot of times we might have people who might be following a little too close to another vehicle, we'll see usually some extra crashes, there may be some ponding on the roadways as well."

By 3 p.m. Monday, Phoenix Police officers had handled 164 traffic hazard calls with at least eight of those involving people stranded in their cars. That's compared to 24 last Monday. There were no reported injuries.

At its peak, Salt River Project reported more than 1,000 of its customers without power in Glendale and Peoria.

Can't wait for monsoon season to be over? You'll have to wait a little longer. There is rain in the forecast both Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

Remember, it only takes 6 inches of water to cause loss of control or stall a vehicle. Don't drive into flooded areas.
