Hospital won't charge families of Dr. Fata's patients to obtain medical records

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (myFOXDetroit.com) -

Crittenton Hospital announced Tuesday it will no longer charge the families of Dr. Fata to obtain the medical records of their deceased loved ones.

Jeff Berz is one of about thirty people who requested medical records from Crittenton Hospital. He needed them for his dad, Milton, who was being cared for by Dr. Fata up until his death.

Berz, like those other thirty families, want to know if Dr. Fata took away what little time his loved one had left. Dr. Fata is accused of intentionally misdiagnosing patients to gain millions of dollars from Medicare.

"For a lot of us, it's been questions and speculation so far. We never got any answers to where this is going to go, and where this whole thing is going, and now, hopefully with these records, it'll begin to give us some direction," Berz tells Fox 2's Randy Wimbley.

Dr. Fata pleaded not guilty to those charges and is being held at the Wayne County jail on a $9 million bond.

About four people were billed and have paid for those medical records. Crittenton Hospital says they will receive a refund.
