Elementary School In Delaware Hosts Anti-Bullying Rally

Posted: Updated:
WILMINGTON, Del. -

Meet Jurdy. He is sort of the Super Hero of Kindness and this big green guy is spreading the word to students at Pulaski Elementary School that "kind is cool."

"They know when they see Jurdy. They do the Jurdy Grin and share the Jurdy kindness around the school," says Jenifer Jurden, the rally organizer.

It's all part of a huge "No Bullying Delaware" initiative that includes song and dance and lots of interaction.

"One of the keys we found is to really speak their language. We make it fun and engaging," says Jurden.

Students are definitely getting the message.

"I'll be really nice to everyone," says one.

"No tolerance in bullying," says another.

"Kind is cool," says a third.

Keeping things on the kid's level, common texting terms are turned into anti-bullying messages: NBD for no big deal or no bullying Delaware, BFF for best friends forever or bullies fizzle fast.

Savannah Neal likes the idea. She knows what it is like to be bullied.

"It really breaks my heart," Neal says.

"It's a major problem and we've actually had kids contact us, saying, 'I'm so glad you are doing this. I was bullied. About time someone does it in a different way,'" says Jurden.

Musician Justin Couch is one of them. He was bullied in third grade and remembers like it was yesterday.

"It was very hurtful; I didn't want to go to school. I cried every morning. I didn't know what to do," says Couch.

Now Justin has joined the effort in Delaware to teach children what to do, even writing a song about standing up to bullies.
