Teen still in hospital after being shot by police

Posted: Updated:

A 16-year-old boy is continuing to recover from a gunshot wound fired by a police officer.

The family of Marquez Redden has hired now an attorney.

The shooting happened last week in DeKalb County. DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander said that the shooting was an "unintentional misfire."

The teenager, who has admitted that he was skipping school, said that he ran when he saw DeKalb County police officers. Those officers were investigating a home invasion and burglary at another home and thought Redden was a suspect.

Redden has undergone two surgeries at Grady Memorial Hospital. His family says that he'll need at least one more surgery to help restore the use of his right arm.

Sherrie Brady of the Cochran Firm said that the family has a lot of questions about the shooting.

"The family hired us because Marquez should not have been shot," Brady said.

Brady said that the family is not bitter, but they want to ensure that a similar incident doesn't happen again.

"We need to be able to trust that when we call in law enforcement, someone innocent doesn't end up injured," Brady said.

Brady said that Redden will likely be at the hospital for at least another week.
