Elderly woman robbed, sexually assaulted in own home

ROMULUS, Mich. (WJBK) -

On Sep. 10, Romulus Police responded to a call on the 28000 block of Riverbridge on a home invasion.  A 72-year-old woman says a man climbed a 6-foot gate then entered her home through an unlocked patio door after she let her dogs out.

The man appeared to have been holding a black object in his hand that was approximately six to eight inches in length. The suspect ransacked the home, took some jewelry then proceeded to sexually assault the elderly woman, police say.

When asked if she'll ever feel as safe as she did before this happened, she tells Fox 2's Andrea Isom, "I'm going to try my very best that he's not taken that away from me. Because my house, my dogs, that's what makes up the part of my life that makes me happy. And I can't let him take that away from me."

The victim wanted to share her story to inspire others to be more vigilant to ensure this will never happen again.

Police describe the suspect as a white male with a slender build, weighing 160 lbs. and approximately five feet nine inches tall. He was wearing a dark blue or black hoodie that zips up, a green shirt and dark colored pants. The victim believes he is in his twenties.

Authorities are investigating this situation and say they collected several pieces of evidence from the interior and exterior of the victim's residence.
