CRYSTAL, Minn. (KMSP) -

Police in Crystal, Minn., are trying to figure out who put rat poison inside the fenced area of the dog park at Welcome Park, located at 46th and Welcome avenues, over the weekend.

In a Facebook post, police said one dog, named Fiona, chewed on the rat poison, but the 10-year-old Bernese mountain dog's owner noticed the odd brick and pulled it out immediately, rinsing Fiona's mouth with water.  Thankfully, the dog was not injured or sickened.

Police searched the park and did not find any more rat poison, but they also haven't found a suspect yet. Investigators say this is the first case of its kind in their community, and they hope residents will help them catch the culprit.

Many local pet owners bring their dogs to the park to meet other animal lovers and find playmates for their pooches, and those who spoke with FOX 9 News are barking mad.

"Crazy! I mean, who would do that?" demanded Jolene Degel. "Someone who hates dogs, or I don't know. It's crazy, so close to home."

Fiona's owners posted signs at the park to warn other dog owners to keep a sharp eye while police turned to Facebook to get the word out.

"This is Felix. He loves to play with other dogs. He smiles from ear to ear when we come over, hoping there are other dogs to play with," Tanya Rodeker said.

Now, Rodeker wants to know who would try to poison her precious pooch.

"It just made me really sad that people resort to such horrible things," she said.

Neighbors in the area say they won't stand for it and will keep a sharp eye out for suspicious activity. Meanwhile, dog owners say they won't be deterred.

If you have any information or witnessed any suspicious activity, call Crystal police at 763-531-1014.
