PCH Christmas card artist profile: Matthew's story

Posted: Updated:

Patients at Phoenix Children's Hospital take part in an art workshop every few months and PCH brings in artists to run these workshops.

The patients draw, paint, get to work with all kinds of art supplies.

The art the patients are working on will be auctioned off to raise money for the hospital.

"Art is a very healing and therapeutic thing we like to do at Phoenix Children's Hospital. Kids are able to express themselves. They get to create things like they didn't know they could do.  It's a different way for them to release and focus their attention on something else than what they're going through," said PCH's Kristy Litten.

The room where the art workshops are held is the "zone" -- it's a playroom and craft room.  They have Nintendo and other consoles so patients can play all sorts of video games.  There's a theater where kids can watch movies.

This art workshop is where PCH patients created the Christmas cards that were printed to be sold in the annual hospital Christmas card program.

This year, five artists were chosen for their card designs and I'm introducing you to one them.

13-year-old Matthew Davis attends Heritage Elementary. At 7-years-old, he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. The tumor started growing at birth.  Once it was discovered, he underwent surgery and two rounds of chemotherapy under the care of PCH.

"Yeah, it was pretty scary going through that stuff like the surgery and thinking about it ..it was pretty scary," he said.

Matthew and his family are forever grateful to the wonderful staff.

"They are all pretty kind and they are just pretty good people," he said.

Six years later, Matthew's cancer is in remission and he's braver than most people.

"I don't feel so scared anymore. I feel fine, like normal."

During his time spent at PCH, he became quite the artist. This year, he was picked as one of the featured artists for their Christmas cards.

"It felt pretty cool that they chose me and like five other kids," he said.  "I love art and like that's my favorite elective."

The PCH Christmas cards go on sale November 1 in Safeway stores and at the hospital.
